I configured "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" which disables the option of when you want to check fro them, but it should happen If this does not work, then as suggested above, run a sfc /scannow and see if it finds and fixes any corrupt files. Microsoft also provides an official Fixit tool to fix Windows Update related problems.

I ran the standalone updater and it seemed to get things started again. There are a number of web articles that discuss it but your page is THE best resource for actually solving it, not talking about it. Your computer will be new again. Shame on MS.
