Note that your internet and some other services do not work in safemode. i am afraid if its notmy hard disk that is failing i dnt know abt ram . could you first check if something is showing up now in "about:crashes"? Let us know if issue doesn't fix.
What is the Correct Fix eg. My IE opens up with a blank white screen, then says not responding and closes after 10 seconds or so. do those crashes also appear when you launch firefox in safe mode once? Also remove the check for the option to Display file icon on thumbnails.
